Jermain Cikic (b. 1992, BA/NL) is a Dutch-Bosnian photographer, currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Drawing on familiar documentary traditions whilst embracing subjectivity, his vibrant projects come together intuitively, revolving around overlapping notions of belonging, migration and displacement. Often, Cikic’s work is rooted in a range of complex locations, from the refugee camps of Greece to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, or to the village where his father was raised in Bosnia’s Republika Srpska. In each setting, the artist builds steady connections with those he encounters, drawn to the overlooked human stories that play out in society’s margins.
A graduate of Photography at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK), Cikic’s practice encompasses traditional printing and analogue processing techniques. His images have been published by platforms such as Vogue, Huck Magazine, Atmos and It’s Nice That. Alongside his personal projects, Cikic works on assignments for various NGOs; his work on the Greek island of Samos was commissioned by the Berlin-based human rights organisation, Mare Liberum. Cikic also closely collaborates with Prazeres United, a social foundation supporting young residents of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas through football, offering children a valuable outlet and a safe environment to develop important life skills.
